is there an even worse ulterior motive?

Looking at the reams of articles about SS, the polls, the interviews, etc - the vast majority of people, including republicans and conservatives, are against the destruction of Social Security. Obviously, there is a good reason for this - no one wants to be responsible for ruining one of the most successful programs in American history.

Given that nearly everyone realizes that this is a terrible idea makes me wonder about the amount of time and energy being expended on it. Does bush really want to be known as the president that abolished the well being of the elderly, or is there another motive for this?

The administration is known for the way it distracts the public away from news that it doesn't want us to know about. Is all the talk about a SS plan that everyone knows is a bad idea simply a smokescreen for some of the other horrendous policies that he wants to inflict upon us? The dismantlement of employer-subsidized health care is the first that comes to mind. This has had so little publicity that maybe it is the policy that he really wants to push through without our knowledge.

I don't know of any of his policies that actually has public support - everything from his wars, his tax cuts, his cuts to education, cuts to the environment, his SS plan, etc, all score amazingly poorly in all polls. Who knows what his real plans are?!
