Just an aside, I am kinda amazed that pundits were making a big deal about McCain's line "I am not President Bush". I didn't think that was much of anything - of course he is trying to distance himself but the facts show that he has been in lockstep with bush for most of the last 8 years. Of course, Obama had a perfect comeback that was far more powerful.
McCain also had a tendency to ramble somewhat incoherently at times. He is getting more "erratic". I don't know if he was just angry or tense at having to do well or what, but he wasn't very clear in general.
I do agree though that one of the biggest mistakes of McCain's was putting women's health in air quotes - that makes him look totally heartless and out of touch with the vast majority of Americans who agree at least that abortion should be available to women for health reasons.
Oh yeah, and the fact that McCain didn't know that Palin's child has Downs Syndrome and not autism is pretty revealing about how much he cares about his running mate! (Or, he was just having another senior moment).
I was just reminded of something else. I will have to find a transcript but when McCain was talking about not having a litmus test for Supreme Court nominees, at the end he kinda trailed off but definitely said something to the effect of "they'll have to agree with me on that...". I'm sure those were not the words but he basically said that the nominees would have to agree that Roe v Wade was ruled badly before he would approve them.
Here's his quote:
MCCAIN: I would consider anyone in their qualifications. I do not believe that someone who has supported Roe v. Wade that would be part of those qualifications. But I certainly would not impose any litmus test.
So, no litmus test, but anyone who supported Roe v Wade would be disqualified? Well, that's objective!
Oh yeah, and can McCain explain why having town hall meetings would have kept him from going negative? I can't see a correlation in my mind.
McCain also went on some bizarre tangent when confronted with some of his supporters screaming obscene and vile things about Obama about Obama accusing veterans of saying these things. That was a major-league jump!
Here's the transcript for those who missed it.
