Hell, I was constantly harassed in high school and called a "fag" simply because I had long hair (this was in the early 70's) - and I was obviously straight - I had a girlfriend!
There are always extremely evil high school kids who will harass anyone who they consider "different".
I can't even imagine what openly gay high-schoolers have to go through.
