rove controlling McCain's campaign?

Rove ‘Waffles’ On Whether He Asked Lieberman To Drop Out Of VP Consideration
(Think Progress)

We know that rove is one of the campaign advisers, but this is kinda bizarre. Considering how conservative Liberman is these days, i don't see how any repug would have a problem with him.

More from Americablog:
Rove heavily involved in McCain's VP selection process

No wonder John McCain is keeping so silent about his vice presidential selection process. Karl Rove is right in the thick of it. He's maneuvering to get Mitt Romney picked -- and trying to exclude his former best friend, Joe Lieberman, from the process. It looks like Rove has taken control of McCain's v.p. operation:

Rove, President Bush’s former top campaign adviser and arguably the most prominent political operative of the past generation, has no formal role in McCain’s campaign. But he knows much of the Arizona senator’s high command and has been offering informal advice, both over the phone and in his position as a Fox News analyst, since McCain wrapped up the GOP nomination.

His decision to wade into the vice presidential selection process could provide Democrats fresh ammunition to tie McCain to the polarizing Bush.

It is also chafing some Lieberman allies and others wary of the selection of former
Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

“Rove is pushing Romney so aggressively some folks are beginning to wonder what's going on,” grumbled one veteran Republican strategist.

This creates a conundrum for McCain. If Romney gets tapped, it show that Rove is still the GOP puppet-master -- which, he is.
