Bush urges Democrats set aside Iraq pullout date

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush on Monday set conditions for talks with Democrats on his $100 billion war funding request, saying he would not consider a troop withdrawal deadline nor billions of dollars in extra spending.

Bush and Democrats in control of the U.S. Congress are locked in a test of wills over Democrats' demand for a withdrawal timetable for U.S. troops in Iraq. Bush insists he would veto such a measure.

Appearing in the White House East Room with military family members, Bush stepped up the rhetoric on his money request ahead of a meeting on Wednesday with Democratic and Republican leaders of the Senate and House of Representatives.

"I hope the Democratic leadership will drop their unreasonable demand for a precipitous withdrawal," Bush said.

While Bush has said he wants to discuss the funding dispute at the meeting, White House officials have made clear that he has no plans to negotiate.
