“We’re for staying the course in Iraq and the war on terror.” — Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) shares the conservative national security message for 2006.

a "New Direction"

Ready for a "New Direction"?

There are just over 100 days left til Election Day. The Democrats have released their agenda and message:

The document, which carries the title "A New Direction for America," is a brief compilation of six themes Democrats have been pushing in various ways all year:

# National security

# Jobs and wages

# Energy independence

# Affordable health care

# Retirement security

# College access for all"

This 100 days is about drilling in the different direction we as Democrats will take this country," said Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

The House version of the plan is here. America desperately needs a new direction. The GOP "stay the course" strategy is a disaster -- it's literally killing people.

bolton nomination

Bolton's U.N. post sparks partisan debate
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration and GOP leaders on Thursday renewed their push for Senate approval of John Bolton as U.N. ambassador. Democrats maintained he is too brash and ineffective to be confirmed.
---
Several Democrats said during the nomination hearing Thursday that their views had not changed, citing reports that Bolton has alienated other ambassadors and failed to make progress on U.N. reform efforts.

"My concern is that at the moment of the greatest need for diplomacy in our recent history, we are not particularly effective at it," said Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

---
Obviously, he has been ineffective and was a terrible choice for this position.
I have read that some people think that it would be good politically not to fight this nomination because then we can still point to bolton as another bush failure.
But we shouldn't let politics get in the way of what is best for the country - that's what the repugs have done and see where that has gotten us!

minimum wage debate

House slates vote on raising minimum wage
WASHINGTON - Bowing to moderates and seeking to defuse a campaign issue before leaving for vacation, House GOP leaders Friday slated a vote to increase the minimum wage to $7.25 per hour within three years.

The vote comes after almost 50 rank-and-file Republican lawmakers pressed House leaders — who strongly oppose the wage hike and have thus far prevented a vote — to schedule the measure for debate. Democrats have been hammering away on the wage hike issue and have public opinion behind them.
---
It was a decade ago, during the hotly contested campaign year of 1996, that Congress voted to increase the minimum wage. A person working 40 hours per week at minimum wage makes $10,700, which is below the poverty line for workers with families.
---
Democrats have made increasing the wage a pillar of their campaign platform and are pushing to raise the wage to $7.25 per hour over two years. In June, the Republican-controlled Senate refused to raise the minimum wage, rejecting a proposal from Democrats.

It's long been clear that there is wide support for the wage increase in the House, but Republican leaders have a general policy of bringing legislation to the floor only if it has support from a majority of Republicans. Perhaps one-fourth of House Republicans support the wage increase.

Inflation has eroded the minimum wage's buying power to the lowest level in about 50 years. Yet lawmakers have won cost-of-living wage increases totaling about $35,000 for themselves over that time.

Lawmakers fear being pounded with 30-second campaign ads over the August recess that would tie Congress' upcoming $3,300 pay increase with Republicans' refusal to raise the minimum wage.

---
For the billionth time, proving that the Dems care about the people and the repugs only care about the ultra-rich. It really is sickening how little the repugs care for the people they are supposed to be serving.

Yet, they have given themselves raises that equal more than 3 times what a minimum wage earner makes!

I honestly don't know how these slimeballs sleep at night.

Here's Think Progress on the "poison pills" that the repugs want to attach to the bill to screw over more people or simply to defeat the bill.

celebrating the energy bill that gave the oil companies the huge profits and us the high gas prices

White House Holds One-Year ‘Celebration’ of Energy Bill With Industry Reps

One year ago today, Congress finalized the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which lavished $14.5 billion in tax breaks on energy firms, nearly 60 percent of which went to “oil, natural gas, coal, electric utilities and nuclear power.”

One year ago, the average national gas price was $2.14. Today, it’s $3.00. The country is no closer to ending its addiction to oil, and fuel economy standards are still stuck at 27.5 miles per gallon (where they’ve been for 20 years). Meanwhile, “five of the world’s largest energy companies are expected to report combined second-quarter profits next week of more than $30 billion.”

For most Americans, this is no reason to celebrate. But most Americans aren’t “Representatives of industries who are benefiting from tax incentives available through the Energy Policy Act of 2005.” Those industry reps are holding a “celebration” of the bill on Capitol Hill today with Energy Secretary Bodman, according to a press release obtained by ThinkProgress.

bush kills the American dream

Another Bush legacy - loss of confidence for the nation

Crushing the American spirit and dreams for the future: Mission Accomplished.

According to the poll, 65 percent say they feel less confident that life for their children's generation will be better than it was for them. In December 2001, the last time this question was asked, respondents — by a 49-42 percent margin — said they were confident life would be better for their children.

In addition, only 27 percent think the country is headed in the right direction, while 58 percent say they are less confident the Iraq war will come to a successful conclusion.

And among those who believe that the nation is headed on the wrong track, a whopping 81 percent believe it's part of a longer-term decline and that things won't get better for some time. Just 12 percent think the problems are short-term blips.

If the Democrats are unable to capitalize on this in the fall, the party might as well just pack their bags and disappear.

(Americablog)
---
Sure, this is a long-term decline. No matter who takes over in the next couple of elections, their main job will be trying to fix the disasters that bush created.
But nothing will be done unless we get the "do-nothing" repugs out of control! They have proven that they will help no one except the ultra-rich and they do not care what happens to the country and the world.
And, once again, how does bush still have a 36% approval rating? Who do they think has caused these problems? Clinton?

more huge oil profits

Shell 2Q profit up 40 pct. on oil prices
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Royal Dutch Shell PLC, Europe's second-largest oil company, said Thursday its second-quarter earnings jumped 40 percent as high oil prices offset production difficulties in Nigeria and the Gulf of Mexico.

---
That was in line with other major oil companies reporting results this week. BP PLC said its second-quarter profit rose 30 percent to $7.3 billion, while ConocoPhillips reported a 65 percent increase to $5.18 billion. Exxon Mobil Corp., the world's largest publicly traded oil company, is due to report its earnings later Thursday.

---
Is there any other business that can make huge profits while costs are rising dramatically? Doesn't increased costs usually affect the bottom line negatively?
Guess not when the prez is your friend!

28% approval rating for Congress. Bush is at 36. And by the GOP's definition, most Americans hate America:

(Americablog)
---
No one likes the repug-run congress because they can see that they are doing nothing of important because the repugs refuse to discuss any issue that the public cares about. Nothing is going to happen unless we change the make-up of this congress.
And how is it possible that 36% STILL approve of bush?! I think that he could eat a living baby while fucking a 12 year old boy live on tv and he would still have this approval rating.

US troops speak out about Iraq, and they're not happy:

"It sucks. Honestly, it just feels like we're driving around waiting to get blown up. That's the most honest answer I could give you," said Spec. Tim Ivey, 28, of San Antonio, a muscular former backup fullback for Baylor University....

Spec. Joshua Steffey, 24, of Asheville, N.C... said he wished "somebody would explain to us, 'Hey, this is what we're working for.' " With a stream of expletives, he said he could not care less "if Iraq's free" or "if they're a democracy."

Just remember. You're there because George Bush lied to the country and now is putting his ego above your well-being and the mission. He won't withdraw you, no matter how bad things get, no matter how lost the mission really is, because that would mean admitting a mistake. So, some of you will die - a lot of you will die - to save George Bush's face.

This is what you get when you vote Republican.

Greek researchers find prehistoric skull
KRIOPIGI, Greece - Greek researchers said Wednesday they had discovered a well-preserved skull of 5 million-year-old primate.

The remains of the Mesopithecus Pentelicus — a monkey-like animal, a little more than 3 feet long — were found in the northern Halkidiki peninsula, outside the city of Thessaloniki.

"It's an important find because it's in such good condition," Evangelia Tsoukala, a professor of geology at Thessaloniki University who is heading the excavation, told state-run NET television.

"It had a tail ... it was herbivorous, and the skull is intact as well as the teeth," she said.

Local officials said they hope to build a museum in the area to put the skull and other prehistoric animal remains found at the site on display.

very cool!

Uncensored 'On the Road' to be published
LOWELL, Mass. - Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" will be published in its unedited original scroll version by Viking Press, which published the Beat Generation classic in September 1957.

John Sampas, executor of the writer's literary estate and brother of Stella Sampas, Kerouac's third wife, said he has signed a contract with Viking, an imprint of Penguin Group USA. He hopes the work will be out by the end of next year, the 50th anniversary of the publication.

"Incidents in the original were edited out of the published version because of the censorship of the time," said Sampas, who noted that some of the edited sections refer to drugs and sex.

"On the scroll, entire paragraphs are crossed out and not included in the published version."

Sampras said the new version will be in book form, but taken from the original scroll. Any sections Kerouac had crossed out before turning it into the publisher will be excluded in the new edition.

In 1951, Kerouac, hopped up on coffee and Benzedrine, sat at a typewriter and began retelling the tale of an aimless trek he made across America. In a spontaneous, stream-of-consciousness burst, he typed on long sheets of tracing paper, taping each finished page to the previous one to form one continuous, rolling text.

Published six years later, "On the Road" won critical praise and became
an icon of the post-World War II subculture of intellectuals, writers, musicians and rebels who identified with the freedom of Kerouac's cross-country odyssey and embraced his disdain for 1950s conformity.

The original, 120-foot, coffee-stained scroll that is yellowing with age was purchased in 2001 by James Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts, for $2.43 million. The scroll is touring U.S. museums and libraries.

Is there anyone who hasn't been influenced by this book?
I saw the scroll at our local library and that is pretty impressive!
Very exciting to see an unedited version!

Reckless tax cuts and wild spending creating problem for Treasury

The credit card congress strikes again. Hacking at tax revenue for the richest Americans and spend-now-think-later policies are putting the pinch on Treasury who has to find a way to make it all work. The Bush-era GOP magic economic formula sounds a lot like Reagan era voodoo economics except Reagan didn't have the black hole of spending for Iraq to contend with and even so, climbing out of that hole was hard enough.

The report acknowledged the debate delicately, saying "the issue of how, or even if, these policies need to be financed remains a source of discussion among economists."

But the Treasury's view reflects "a recognition the federal government has to finance the tax relief" to avoid a rise in government debt, Robert Carroll, deputy assistant secretary for tax analysis, said in an interview.

The report stressed that the economic effects of extending the tax cuts "depend crucially on whether they are financed by lower spending or higher taxes in the future."

MEDIA STRAINS TO PORTRAY BUSH AS ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN MIDEAST CRISIS; CNN SAYS MIDEAST TURMOIL GOOD FOR BUSH.

It's been kind of interesting to watch the big news orgs struggle and strain to portray President Bush as an active, hands-on participant in resolving the mideast crisis. As I noted below, Newsweek got extraordinary access to Bush for days on end, and somehow managed to portray him as a decisive crisis manager without capturing him in the act of making a meaningful decision. Now check out this extraordinary paragraph on CNN's politics page:

The Middle East crisis is giving President Bush a second chance to be a peacemaker and, however counterintuitive, an unexpected new chance to make headway on his grand goal of leaving the Middle East more democratic than he found it.

That one belongs in the time capsule, doesn't it? Anyone by chance recall Bush's first effort to be a "peacemaker"? Me either. I do, however, vaguely recall him initiating a war of choice on false pretenses that has left over 2,500 Americans dead and many tens of thousands severely wounded. Maybe in the world of CNN war is peace, as the Orwellian phrase has it. It's also worth pointing out that the Bush administration has actually rebuffed calls for the U.S. to push for a cease-fire.

The CNN paragraph links to this article in Time magazine which, while not as favorable as CNN's billing of it, doesn't even mention that the United States is speeding precision bombs to Israel, an act which is kind of at odds with Bush's alleged bid to be a "peacemaker." Meanwhile, the Time article takes readers through the usual things which are supposed to portray an active crisis manager at work, saying that Bush "initiated a series of phone calls from Air Force One and the Oval Office to leaders around the region." Yes, that's right, the President made some calls. And the article concludes on the following note:

Aides say he is content for now to take steps toward transforming the region in less obvious but, they believe, more fundamental and lasting ways.

It's impossible to know what this actually means, or whether any aides actually said this, but accepting it for the moment at face value, it's reassuring to know that Bush is "content" with the impact his administration is having on the Middle East. For a moment there one might have thought things weren't going all that well over in that part of the world.

Democrats seek changes to abortion bill
WASHINGTON - Confidants like grandparents or ministers who help pregnant teens should be protected from prosecution under a bill headed for Senate passage that would punish anyone who takes girls across state lines to end their pregnancies, Democrats said Tuesday.
---
Opponents of the bill say it would cut off an escape route for pregnant teens with abusive parents who live in the states with parental consent or notification laws.

Democrats also will propose additional exceptions for those who help pregnant teens get abortions in other states in cases of rape or incest.

Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill, complained that the bill is the latest on a list of measures Republican leaders are bringing up for votes in an effort to appeal to the GOP's base of social conservatives. No one in his state has raised the practice of interstate abortions as a major source of concern, he said.

repug lies re: minimum wage

Ohio Right Wing Spreads Minimum Wage Jobs Myth
In Ohio and other states, progressives are pushing ballot initiatives to raise state minimum wages above the federal minimum of $5.15 an hour, where it’s been stuck since 1997.

The right wing in Ohio is fighting against the initiative with the old argument that a minimum wage increase would lead to fewer jobs:

“This is economics 101. When you raise the minimum wage, you cost young people and low-income people their jobs,” [the conservative Buckeye Institute’s Matthew] Carr said. Businesses don’t create as many of them, because they cost more now.”

But here are the facts:

1. A higher minimum wage does not mean higher unemployment. One comprehensive study found increases in the minimum wage in various states in the late 1980s and early 1990s did not result in increased unemployment. It found a minimum wage increase in New Jersey did not cause a descrease in lower-wage jobs.

2. Small business growth has been greater in states with minimum wage levels above the federal level. A report by the Center for American Progress and Policy Matters Ohio found that the “11 states with a minimum wage above the federal minimum of $5.15 per hour had higher rates of small business growth between 1997 and 2003.”

3. State minimum wage hikes have increased payroll and revenue without creating job loss. “A recent report from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development said last year’s increase in the state’s hourly rate — to $5.70 from $5.15 — produced $175 million in additional payroll and a $3 million boost in state tax revenue.”

Bush, Merkel slice into roast pig at German barbecue
---
The barbecue was a much-anticipated highlight of Bush's visit to Merkel's political home base in northeastern Germany, a grilling he had been looking forward to all day.
---
They walked past a red-coated band playing a medley of songs like "Hooray for the Red, White and Blue," and Bush plucked the conductor's wand from his hand and led the band for a few notes.

Then he and Merkel posed for pictures with the band as its members played on, Bush startling a woman playing a flute by poking her on the shoulder.
---
At a joint news conference with Merkel earlier in Stralsund, Bush kept mentioning a wild boar, slaughtered and roasted the traditional way, that he planned to share at the dinner.

"I'm looking forward to the feast you're going to have tonight. I understand I may have the honor of slicing the pig," Bush told Merkel.

A few minutes later -- after discussing Iran, the Middle East, the merits of press freedoms in Russia and progress on the Doha round of free trade talks -- Bush returned to the boar.

"Thank you for having me," he told Merkel. "Looking forward to that pig tonight."

Bush answered a few more questions but kept coming back to the boar for a third, then a fourth time.

---
The Daily Show had the video of the conference where bush couldn't stop talking about the pig, no matter what the subject of the question was.

And now we find out that he just kept groping people the entire time he was there.

Reid: Iraq is a "civil war"

Harry Reid is calling Iraq what it is:

Declaring that he believes the situation in Iraq has devolved into a civil war, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday he plans to try to bring the war back up for debate on the Senate floor.

The Nevada Democrat said he has been "somewhat gingerly approaching this.... No longer. There is a civil war going on in Iraq. In the last two months, more than 6,000 Iraqis have been killed. That's averaging more than 100 a day being killed in Iraq and we need to make sure there is a debate on this."

Bill Frist's spokesperson said talking about Iraq is a "bad summer rerun." The GOP loves to play politics with Iraq. They hate doing policy on Iraq because they have no policy besides "stay the course." Their course continues to be a disaster of epic proportions.

bush completely divorced from reality

Bush thinks his Iraq policy is model for Middle East conflicts. Uh-oh.

According to an analysis in today's Washington Post, our great foreign policy leader believes that the current conflict in Lebanon is a step toward peace -- apparently using Iraq as a model:

In the administration's view, the new conflict is not just a crisis to be managed. It is also an opportunity to seriously degrade a big threat in the region, just as Bush believes he is doing in Iraq.

Bush believes he's doing that in Iraq, but no one else does. He's created new threats in the region -- and emboldened the very people he set out to vanquish. This is a disaster.

If any of us admitted publicly to having committed a recent act of terrorism, we'd be locked up immediately. But when lead Republicans admit to such things, the Bush administration does nothing. Pat Robertson suggests that the State Department should be nuked (he really did), and no one bats an eye. Ann Coulter first suggests that Timothy McVeigh should have considered blowing up the New York Times, that the NYT executive editor should be executed, and this week, according to published reports, Coulter says she sent fake Anthrax to the New York Times (they received an envelope with white powder last week).

Did Coulter send the fake Anthrax? She says she did.

Will she or any other conservative voicing support for terrorist acts against Americans ever be held accountable by this administration? Or at least by their own party? Or will Pat Robertson continue to be the religious darling of the Republican party and the Bush White House, and will Ann Coulter continue to receive her tens of thousands of dollars in speaking fees at Republican conferences and events?

Unlikely. After all, we do have stem cells, gay marriage, and the flag to worry about. Who can expect the Bush administration to be actually worried about terrorism, especially when it comes from the mouths of their biggest supporters.

Earlier today, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) criticized the Bush adminstration for telling American evacuees from Lebanon they would have to repay their transportation costs. “A nation that can provide more than $300 billion for a war in Iraq can provide the money to get its people out of Lebanon.” CNN reports that the White House has reversed its position and will be waiving the costs.

Bush on Stem Cell Veto: ‘These Boys and Girls Are Not Spare Parts’

Moments ago, Bush made a statement at the White House discussing why he vetoed a bill expanding funding for embryonic stem cell research. (The media was barred from covering the veto itself.) Bush explained, “these boys and girls are not spare parts.”

An embryo is not a boy or a girl. It’s a cluster of about 150 cells smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. The embryos funded by the bill Bush vetoed were “created for the purposes of in vitro fertilization…which are spare or in excess of clinical need and in every single case are slated for medical waste.”

Only about 10 percent of embryos are adopted — the rest are disposed of. Had Bush signed the bill into law, they could instead be used to develop potentially live-saving cures for millions of people.

Because there is nothing you can do that is a big enough screw-up in the Bush administration that you won't be praised for it. At a time when the Middle East is in flames, rewarding one of the architects of Abu Ghraib is more than a little stupid. Message: Bush doesn't care.

William Haynes II, the Pentagon’s general counsel, has been closely involved in shaping some of the Bush administration’s most legally and morally objectionable policies, notably on the use of torture. The last thing he is suited to be is a federal judge, but that is just what President Bush wants to make him. The Senate has been far too willing to rubber-stamp the president’s extreme judicial nominees. But there is reason to hope that strong opposition to Mr. Haynes, including from the military, may block this thoroughly inappropriate choice.

U.S. Terror Targets: Petting Zoo and Flea Market?

WASHINGTON, July 11 — It reads like a tally of terrorist targets that a child might have written: Old MacDonald’s Petting Zoo, the Amish Country Popcorn factory, the Mule Day Parade, the Sweetwater Flea Market and an unspecified “Beach at End of a Street.”
---
The National Asset Database, as it is known, is so flawed, the inspector general found, that as of January, Indiana, with 8,591 potential terrorist targets, had 50 percent more listed sites than New York (5,687) and more than twice as many as California (3,212), ranking the state the most target-rich place in the nation.
---
In addition to the petting zoo, in Woodville, Ala., and the Mule Day Parade in Columbia, Tenn., the auditors questioned many entries, including “Nix’s Check Cashing,” “Mall at Sears,” “Ice Cream Parlor,” “Tackle Shop,” “Donut Shop,” “Anti-Cruelty Society” and “Bean Fest.”

---
I grew up in Indiana and the only reason that terrorists would want to target any part of that state is if they wanted to hit the most boring places in America!
I mean, its a nice, quiet state to relax in, but why would anyone target it for any reason?

Mr. Speaker, yesterday the President said we continue to be wise about how we spend the people's money.

"Then why are we paying over $100,000 for a 'White House Director of Lessons Learned'?

"Maybe I can save the taxpayers $100,000 by running through a few of the lessons this White House should have learned by now.

"Lesson 1: When the Army Chief of Staff and the Secretary of State say you are going to war without enough troops, you're going to war without enough troops.

"Lesson 2: When 8.8 billion dollars of reconstruction funding disappears from Iraq, and 2 billion dollars disappears from Katrina relief, it's time to demand a little accountability.

"Lesson 3: When you've 'turned the corner' in Iraq more times than Danica Patrick at the Indy 500, it means you are going in circles.

"Lesson 4: When the national weather service tells you a category 5 hurricane is heading for New Orleans, a category 5 hurricane is heading to New Orleans.

"I would also ask the President why we're paying for two 'Ethics Advisors' and a 'Director of Fact Checking.'

"They must be the only people in Washington who get more vacation time than the President.

"Maybe the White House could consolidate these positions into a Director of Irony."

bush celebrates failure

Bush Celebrates Fourth Largest Deficit In History

Today, the Office of Management Budget projected a $296 billion federal deficit for fiscal year 2006. Bush held a press conference arguing that this is a vindication of his economic policies.

Actually, it would be the fourth largest deficit of all time. Here’s the top five:

1. 2004 (George W. Bush) $413 billion

2. 2003 (George W. Bush) $378 billion

3. 2005 (George W. Bush) $318 billion

4. 2006 (George W. Bush) $296 billion (projected)

5. 1992 (George H. W. Bush) $290 billion

When President Bush came into office, he inherited a surplus of $284 Billion. At that time, the Bush administration predicted a $516 billion surplus for 2006.

The fact that Bush now considers a $296 billion deficit an occasion to celebrate shows how far we’ve fallen.

(Think Progress)

And from the LA Times:

But the apparent good news will not strike some economists as surprising: This will be the third year in a row that the administration put forth relatively gloomy deficit forecasts early on, only to announce months later that things had turned out better than expected. To some skeptics, it's beginning to look like an economic version of the old "expectations" game.

Rove: Plame leaker should be fired

If Rove thinks the person who leaked Plame's name should be fired, it would indicate that the leaker still works at the White House. The only staff person besides Scooter Libby implicated in the leak is Karl Rove. Libby doesn't work there anymore. Can he fire himself?:

As for the Plame affair, Rove stumbled and then refused to answer.

Valerie Plame was an undercover CIA agent whose identity administration sources revealed to conservative columnist Robert Novak after her husband, Ambassador Joseph Wilson, publicly challenged the administration's claims about Iraq's nuclear program. Her career with the CIA ended, and some of her sources may have been in jeopardy as a result of the leak.

Isaacson posed the question in the same way [President Bill] Clinton had Friday night. Issacson, parroting Clinton, pointed out that if a member of the Clinton administration had outed a CIA officer, "You'd be sending people to demand impeachment. You'd be playing it better than the Democrats can play it against you."

Rove then said that after a "careful, thoughtful, aggressive investigation," then the person responsible should be fired

."Have confidence in the process," he said. But Isaacson continued pressing on the issue asking, "Don't you have some regrets about that? That was [a] regrettable event."

"I'm going to respect the fact that there's an ongoing case," Rove said, again to hissing from the audience.

Clinton nailed it, as usual.

The group successfully challenged the issuance of same-sex marriage licenses in California and Oregon, and worked on statewide ballot initiatives prohibiting such unions. Its attorneys helped the Boy Scouts win approval of a policy barring gay Scout leaders.

The group has been battling embryonic stem cell research in Missouri and won a Supreme Court stay preventing the removal of California's 29-foot Mount Soledad cross. In Florida, where saving the life of brain-damaged Terri Schiavo became a crusade, the group supported efforts to nourish her.

Ok, for a Republican Member of Congress to realize that Bush is breaking the law, the Administration has to be doing something especially egregrious. Because, everyone knows the GOPers on the Hill are just Bush's lapdogs:

In a sharply worded letter to President Bush in May, an important Congressional ally charged that the administration might have violated the law by failing to inform Congress of some secret intelligence programs and risked losing Republican support on national security matters.

So, what the hell else has Bush been doing?:

"I have learned of some alleged intelligence community activities about which our committee has not been briefed," Mr. Hoesktra wrote. "If these allegations are true, they may represent a breach of responsibility by the administration, a violation of the law, and, just as importantly, a direct affront to me and the members of this committee who have so ardently supported efforts to collect information on our enemies."

He added: "The U.S. Congress simply should not have to play Twenty Questions to get the information that it deserves under our Constitution."

Even when Congress does play Twenty Questions, they don't get any answers. They're useless.

WH involved in election tampering/phone jamming

NH Phone Jammer: The White House made me do it

This scandal just keeps getting closer and closer to the White House political team which was run by Ken Mehlman. Via the Senate Majority Project: According to a recent court filing, indicted phone jammer Shaun Hansen may offer an affirmative defense at his upcoming fall trial, arguing that the phone jamming scheme which his company carried out had the seal of approval of both the Republican National Committee and the White House.

Apparently, Hansen's defense strategy is not going to focus on whether or not he jammed Democratic phone lines on Election Day in 2002. Rather, his defense strategy will be to persuade a jury that he may have been persuaded not just that the phone jamming was legal, but that he would be carrying out the scheme on behalf of the United States government.

Unlike another defendant in this scandal, Mr. Hansen's legal expenses are not being paid by the RNC. But, seems like he is going to make them pay.

Arpaio says he dresses jailed immigrants in pink underwear, pink handcuffs and a stripped jumpsuit. He also forces them to listen to “patriotic songs” multiple times a day.

Arpaio’s prison has also been the site of multiple controversial inmate deaths.
